This brief demo is intended to show students how studying with CALCampus works. The Course Management System (CMS) used by CALCampus is called Moodle. Moodle is open source. It has become very popular among educators around the world as a tool for creating online dynamic web sites for their students. Today, Moodle is used in more than 190 countries, and supports over 70 languages.
LOGGING IN To begin your class, either click the “Login” icon on the CALCampus High School home page, which takes you to the following website: http://cms.calcampus.com Enter your login user name and password, which you are issued upon enrolling in a CALCampus course.
FINDING YOUR COURSE Once you have logged in, you are taken to a menu of academic departments. Click on the department in which your course is offered.
Let’s say your class is in the English Department. You will be taken to the following menu in order to select your individual course (only a few courses are listed here in order to save space):
Let’s say your class is English 200, Basic English I. Click on the course title.
GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR COURSE Now we can introduce you to your course. The following information will appear first on your course page:
Course News and Information gives general news and announcements. Welcome gives basic background information about how your specific course works. Each teacher teaches the course differently: some offer text lessons for download, some create PowerPoint demonstrations, some offer audio-recorded lessons, and some offer video lessons. Syllabus gives you your course syllabus, which describes what you will be doing during each week of the course (courses are organized around a 12-week schedule). The syllabus will also indicate the instructor’s office hours and contact information. Instructor’s Office is where the instructor holds his/her weekly office period. Your instructor will be online and available to answer any questions you have live during this period. Getting Started shows you how to begin your course. It discusses how to download course lessons, how to download assignments, and how to upload homework, among other topics. New Student Check-In is required for all students. Here, you can tell your instructor a little about yourself, including why you are taking his/her course. This helps students and instructors get to know each other. You are able to upload a photo of yourself into the CMS, which makes chatting with your instructor more personal.
TAKING YOUR COURSE CALCampus teachers use a variety of teaching methods. In most courses, you will study from a textbook offline, as well as have access to online support resources. As in any school, each teacher has a slightly different method of presentation and teaching. To illustrate a course, let’s look at Lesson 1 for English 200. You will see the following image on your screen, right beneath the information about getting started:
In this particular course, the instructor has prepared each lesson in two parts: 1) In some courses, there will be links to support materials provided by the textbook publishers. Some instructors also provide online quizzes. Each week, there is homework due and there are submission links where you will upload your homework. The syllabus will outline what is expected of you throughout the course. Lesson 1 Q&A: Homework Assignment 1: Submit Assignment 1: Typically, students type their homework assignments in a word processing program. You also have the option of handwriting your homework, scanning it, and uploading the scanned file. Scanning your homework can be useful for some subjects, such as mathematics, chemistry, or foreign languages. Your instructor will evaluate your homework and post your grade, as well as comments.
We hope that this brief Demo has helped to de-mystify the online learning process for you and get you started on your CALCampus course. Good luck!
